Moose and Echocardiograms

This is the story of a chocolate chihuahua named Moose that saved 80% on his vet bill by using MexiVet Expess…

Moose is an 11 year old chihuahua that badly needed a teeth cleaning and extractions. MexiVet Express had the pleasure of transporting this handsome fella to Vet Playas in Tijuana. During his consultation, the veterinarian listened to his heart and noticed a heart murmur and her visual inspection of his mouth revealed infected gums. These types of show stoppers happen in around 1 in 10 clients.

Heart murmurs are not always a show stopper, but in this case, the murmur sounded advanced enough to warrant further investigation with an echocardiogram. The echocardiogram was important because of Moose’s age and his need for anesthesia during the teeth cleaning.

In San Diego, echocardiograms start at around $300 while at Vet Playas they cost around $85. Moose’s echocardiogram revealed that he needed 3 weeks of heart medicine prior to anesthesia.

As for his infected gums, he needed 5 days of antibiotics prior to his teeth cleaning. The gums cannot be badly infected during the teeth cleaning or extraction process. The chance of the infection spreading is greatly increased in these times.

So, we left our first trip at Vet Playas without having had the teeth cleaning. This was not a failure because Moose’s owner still saved money. The cost for Moose’s transportation, exam, echocardiogram, and medicines was $260. In San Diego that would have cost a minimum of $400 and does not include transportation!

Our second appointment went off without a hitch! Moose got his bloodwork done which revealed no infection and cleared him for the teeth cleaning. During his teeth cleaning they did 11 “simple” extractions. These types of extractions are typically dead teeth that in many cases are not completely connected to the gums.

For the exam, bloodwork, teeth cleaning, 11 simple extractions, and transportation, Moose’s dad paid $385.

If you’re wondering what his veterinarian quoted him in San Diego for all this, it was around $3000. At the end, using MexiVet Express, he paid $645! That is almost an 80% SAVINGS!
